Newark began as a small community built by Scots-Irish and Welsh settlers in the early 1700s. The town was built around the crossroads of the paths that Native Americans and fur traders took, and served as the road to the market for early farmers. The city was established upon receiving a charter from the King of England in 1757. The growth of what began as a grammar school played a significant role in the shaping of the town’s character. This school is now the University of Delaware, and has upwards of 7000 students in residence. The population of the city is right around 28,000.

Since Newark is essentially a college town, the atmosphere is appropriate to the influx of students who come to the University here. The town has plenty to do, both for the early twenty-something at school here, and for people from all other walks of life.

Average commute time to work is less than half an hour, which isn’t bad.

At an average rent per month of $625, and monthly homeowner expenses of$1200 a month, Newark is one of the more expensive larger cities in Delaware to live.
