Delaware's travel and recreation industry is second only to manufacturing in economic importance, and so the Delaware Tourism Office continues to work on ways to improve the industry within the state. In 2001, the state launched the “It’s Good to be First” campaign, which plays upon the state's claim as the first of the original colonial states to ratify the United States Constitution. In the early part of the millennium there were some twelve million visitors to the state. Nearly forty percent were day travelers from the neighboring states. The no-sales-tax shopping and the state's beaches are the most popular attractions.
Rehoboth Beach stands on the Atlantic Coast as the "Nation's Summer Capital", mostly due to the many federal officials and foreign diplomats who spend their summers there. Fort Delaware is a popular historic site, and other activities include fishing, clamming, crabbing, boating, and swimming.
As for shopping, some local venues do include the big-name, who’s-who outlets and businesses, but local craftsmen and shops abound as well. The racetrack at Dover Downs is not something to miss either. Gambling is legal, so if one is feeling lucky one might venture to bet on the harness racing there.
