As you board the ship you will be excited no doubt, but maybe also a little anxious as this is your first cruise. Knowing what to expect should help you to settle in quicker.
As you board the ship, the staff will be lined up to greet you. You will have to present your photo ID and boarding card for the security officer. Failure to show proper documentation will result in the cruise lines refusing to allow you to board. You will not be given a refund either.
Once inside your cabin, check to be sure everything is in order. There should be a life jacket on the bed along with the ship’s daily schedule.
Take a moment to read over the schedule for meal times, activities being offered, and the scheduled time for muster drill. There is no need to rush to have your “sail and sign” card validated. The lines will be long and it will be accepted without validation for the first couple of days.
As you meander through the first buffet you will see waiters offering “Bon Voyage” drinks. Be aware that the drinks and photos are not complimentary. There will probably be a long line for the buffet, but it will not be like this all the time. It is best to wait until they have been serving a while before heading to the buffet. There is always plenty of food.
Check the restaurant to see if your seating assignment is to your liking. If not, the headwaiter will be there ready to make changes.
There will be a muster drill that you must attend and then you are free to spend the remainder of the day checking out the spa, casino, and onboard activities. It will take a while to get your luggage so enjoy the ship while you are waiting.
At the first dinner you will meet your wait staff and be introduced to the others at your table. The dress for the first night onboard is typically casual. The meal is included in the price of your cruise but be aware that any drinks other than tea and coffee are billed to your account.
After dinner there will generally be a show in the main theater. The casinos and lounges will be open for your enjoyment.
Once you return to your cabin, you’ll find that the steward has turned down your bed and left a schedule for the next day’s activities. Tomorrow will be a new day full of fun and excitement.
Bon Voyage!
