Planning your first cruise can be a bit overwhelming if you have not done your homework. The following are some practical tips to keep in mind:
• Plan ahead – Planning your first cruise should be done at least four months prior to departure. Your travel will be more enjoyable if you are not rushing to get things done at the last minute.
• Decide on length of cruise – You must determine the amount of total time you want to be away. Cruises range from long weekends to month long adventures. Keep in mind the time it will take to get to and from your departure point.
• Cruise budget – Generally, most cruises are very reasonable and include most of your meals. You will be expected to pay for your onboard drinks, shore excursions, airfare, and any purchases you want to make. Taking a cruise during the off-season can save you up to 25% off your fare.
• Activities – In choosing a cruise ship and your excursion packages, keep in mind the activities that are of interest to you and your family. Are you looking to simply unwind with a book by the pool or wanting adventure, casinos, and high activity?
• Dress – Another consideration is whether you want a more casual dress or do you want to go formal. Many cruises allow for both casual and more dressy attire so be sure to pack both in case something fun catches your eye after you are onboard. Arrangements can be made to rent tuxedos onboard.
• Cabins – You will find several cabin choices on a cruise ship.
o Standard - Many cruise ships have standard cabins of similar size and amenities, with the difference being where the cabin is located on the ship. The least expensive, inside standard cabins on a typical cruise ship are about 120 square feet to 180 square feet in size. They generally have twin beds that can be pushed together for a couple.
o Ocean view – The only difference with an ocean view cabin is that they have a window, which may be a porthole or could be an actual window. The porthole cabins are on the lowest decks and are the least expensive.
o Balcony – These cabins have siding glass doors that not only allow you to see outside from anywhere in your room, but to also go outside. These cabins are typically larger than a standard cabin, sometimes with a loveseat or convertible sofa.
o Suites – Suites have separate sitting and sleeping areas, larger bathrooms, and a balcony. A suite may often have better service than the other cabins. A suite is a good choice if you plan to spend much time in your cabin.
