Today, Costa Rica is a democratic republic state. All citizens have the right to vote and own property, freedom of speech, the right of petition and assembly and the right of habeas corpus. The government of Costa Rica is run by a president who may only serve one four-year term in his lifetime. The president is supported by two vice-presidents, and the 15 cabinet members round out the executive branch of the government. In addition, a complex system of checks and balances is in effect. The largest political party in Costa Rica is the National Liberation Party, and the smaller rival party is the more conservative Social Christian Unity Party.
