If you are lucky enough to embark on adventure to Costa Rica, try to schedule as much time away on your vacation as possible. There is so much to see and do in this country; one week here would require you to see the sights at a breakneck pace. Although two weeks would also go by in a flash, spending this much time here would provide you opportunity to see more of the country’s highlights at a more reasonable and relaxing pace.
When arriving in Costa Rica you will either fly into San Jose, the city’s capital in the central part of the country, or into Liberia. Unless you are going to base your trip in the Guanacaste region, you should choose to fly into San Jose because the road system leading to and from this city is more developed, although that is not saying much, than the roads in other parts for the country. Also, San Jose has some sights worth seeing if you have an afternoon or evening to spend here.
The best time to travel to Costa Rica is during the dry season, which lasts from December to April. The cloud and fog cover is considerably less during this time, increasing your chances of seeing some of the country’s most beautiful sights.
It is possible to rent a car in San Jose and drive yourself throughout your trip. Keep in mind that the road system is very primitive and there are several high and twisting roads that meander through the mountains. Although driving is a great way to see the countryside, you must use caution, especially in the late afternoons as the cloud cover sets in over the mountaintops and limits your visibility. If you don’t trust your driving abilities in a country such as this, it is also possible to utilize shuttles, taxis or tour buses throughout your trip.
