If you are able to stay longer than just one week and can do more sightseeing across the country, add on the following excursions that will enhance your total Costa Rican experience.
After you leave the Arenal Volcano area on the morning of Day 4, spend a day at the Cano Negro Wildlife Refuge. Schedule a guided tour through the lowland forest reserve to maximize your experience.
On your way to the Central Pacific Coast, stop to spend an evening or two in the Manuel Antonio National Park area. This is perhaps the country’s most famous National Park because of the beaches, lush rain forests, mangrove swamps and abundant marine life. You can spend your day lying on the beach or exploring the park and its wildlife inhabitants. The area also has several great restaurants to choose from – probably the best selection in the country.
From Manuel Antonio, travel to Monteverde to explore the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve. This is a great place for another canopy tour (choose the Original Canopy Tour), do some shopping or explore the Frog Pond or World of Insects. The canopy tour here is unique because you climb up the inside of a hollow-out fig tree, placing you among epiphytic bromeliads and tillandsia that are breathtaking.
