You can scan documents and either store them in your PC or print them out immediately (so that the device acts as a copier). You can also scan documents and either send them to your PC for faxing, or fax them directly from the multifunction. And because all these functions are contained in one unit, you save space, and don't have to deal with multiple connections.
If you need a fax, make sure you're getting one. Some multifunction printers don't have fax capabilities. Others must use your computer's modem card to send faxes. One that works on a stand-alone basis would be more convenient.
If you'll do lots of copying, check for an automatic document feeder (ADF). The document feeder is handy for multi-page documents.
Auto duplexers print on both sides of the paper. This can save you money. A few high-end multifunction printers have duplexers. You can buy add-on duplexers for others, usually for about $100. Duplexers dramatically slow printing speeds.
Manufacturers often vastly overstate printing specifications. They'll range anywhere from 15 to 30 pages per minute. If speed is important, test the printer in the store.
To share the printer, look for built-in networking. Some have Ethernet ports; others sport built-in wireless networking. You can also get Bluetooth connectivity for printing from mobile phones.
Remember to price replacement ink cartridges. This is particularly important if you frequently print photos. Printers with individual tanks are more economical. With tricolor cartridges, you have to replace the entire thing, even if it's out of only one ink color.
