When you go over your friend’s house, do you see him download email from his PDA? Or is he cruising the Internet with a box connected to his TV, otherwise known as Web TV? Or, when you use your cell phone, do you use tools to access the Internet or email? If so, you’ve just experienced the Internet appliance. Internet appliances are becoming very well known. Many stores carry them today. Nearly everywhere you look you find someone using one. The question on your mind is what is an Internet appliance and how can you recognize one so you can get one? Hopefully by reading this article, you’ll gain a better understanding of what they are and know what to look for. Here are some characteristics of Internet appliances:
 
·        They are used as web appliances: These Internet appliances are mainly used for web hosting. They have a large hard drive to hold millions of web pages. And they do offer support for file transfers. And may contain web authoring tools.  
·        They can work with eCommerce: These appliances go beyond just basic web services. They are also capable of accepting payments and sending payments through an electronic payment network. These appliances are normally online all the time.
·        They can be used to share network resources: These appliances come with plenty of disk space and software to store a considerable amount of files, and make them available for others to use.  
·        They can support Internet applications: This is the most common reason to have Internet appliances. You use these for email, web browsing, news groups, and more.
·        They can be used as communication devices: Some people use Internet appliances as a way to communicate remotely. They can also be used to allow many people to share one line.
