A gamepad is a type of controller used when playing games on the computer. Also known as a joypad, the controller is held with both hands and the thumbs are used to provide input to the game. They normally will also feature buttons and a direction controller. Some of the more modern gamepads also include shoulder buttons and internal motors that provide force feedback.
There is no one standard game pad. There are a variety of gamepads available to personal computers and the choice is really a matter of personal taste. Many games require a specific type of game pad, joystick, steering wheel, or other controller. It is best to use the gamepad that is appropriate for the game you are playing. Games will come with recommendations from the manufacturers as to which type of gamepad is best. A digital controller is normally faster and more responsive than the analog controllers.
The following are standard gamepads:
• Paddle – A controller featuring a round wheel and one or more fire button.
• Joystick – The joystick is most often used for flight simulators. It features a handheld stick that pivots about one end and transmits its angle in two or three dimensions to a computer.
• Steering wheel – Used for driving simulators, the steering wheel generally comes with pedals to control the gas and brake. Many steering wheels are force fed which gives the same feedback as if you were driving a real car.
