A computer device that is a non-essential part of the computer is referred to as a computer peripheral. Computer peripherals can be externals devices such as the keyboard, mouse, printer, monitor, and scanner or internal devices such as the modem, or CD drive. Computer peripherals are added to computers to expand their capabilities.

The term input/output describes any program, operation, or device that transfers data to or from a peripheral device and the computer. Every transfer is an output from one device and an input from the other device.

Most computer peripherals now use universal serial bus (USB) connections. USB connections allow you to connect peripherals to the outside of the computer without having to open the computer and install a card. You simply plug the USB into the port and it works.

When selecting a computer, it is important to consider the peripherals that you will be using with the computer. Take into consideration the processor speed, available RAM, hard drive size, and the number of peripheral device slots available.
