EPROM is an earlier form of EEPROM, which requires an ultraviolet lamp, rather than electrical commands on a serial or parallel bus, to erase data. Although EEPROMS can be erased in-place, they must be removed from their circuit and put under a UV lamp to erase them. This creates difficulties when using EPROMS, since repeated connecting and disconnecting can eventually lead to physical wear on the delicate electronics. Also, the process of removing and inserting the EPROM chip runs the risk of static discharge, which can damage sensitive equipment connected to it.
