Summer and early fall are the seasons that you are most likely to get bit or stung by an insect. This is due to the fact that nest populations exceed 60,000 insects during this time. Although insect repellent can help you avoid a bite, it will not protect you against stinging insects. There are some precautions you can take against stings. Yellow jackets nest in the ground and in the walls. Hornets and wasps nest in bushes, trees, and building. Exercise caution when working or playing in these areas. Try to avoid open garbage cans and exposed food at picnics and keep the amount of exposed skin to a minimum when you are outdoors. It’s also a good idea to avoid wearing sweet-smelling perfumes, hair sprays, colognes, and deodorants, and to avoid wearing bright clothing. Don’t walk barefoot through the grass as honeybees and bumblebees could be foraging on white clover and you could step on one.
