The flu can trigger different reactions in different people. The illness can range anywhere from mild to severe and sometimes can even lead to death. The first thing to do if you think you have the flu is to be aware of common flu symptoms. However, even if you are experiencing flu-like symptoms, you don't necessarily have the flu. There are many illnesses that have the same symptoms, including the common cold. A doctor's exam may be necessary to determine whether or not you have the flu or have developed complications from the flu. If you are at high-risk for complications from the flu, you should contact your physician. Your doctor may recommend the use of an antiviral medication. There are currently four antiviral medication approved to treat the flu. They are amantadine, rimantadine, zanamavir, and oseltamivir. These treatments last five days and must be started within 2 days of the on-set of symptoms.

There are also several other ways to take care of yourself when you have the flu. Get plenty of rest. Drink lots of liquids. Avoid the use of alcohol and tobacco. Taking medications such as acetaminophen can help reduce fevers and muscle aches associated with the flu.
