Transportation - How do I get around Denver?

• Automobiles—The residents of Denver are highly automobile dependent, with an average licensed vehicle for every resident in the City/County. As Denver is in the midst of mountainous areas, and wide, open spaces, public transportation is not as easily managed as it is in more self-enclosed city spaces. Over-congestion is a major problem for Denver and the crowded freeways that encircle the city remain the biggest complaint of the residents.

• Public Transportation—
o Light Rail—The Regional Transportation District runs two rail lines covering 15.8 miles and 24 stations. Recent funding was approved to extend the lines to parts of the greater Denver Metro area.
o Bus System—The Regional Transportation District also operates a system of over 1,000 buses, and 10,000 bus stops.

• Air Transport—Denver International Airport was opened in 1995. It is a 55 square mile structure and its building was hoped to secure Denver on the national transportation maps.

• Trains—The Amtrak California Zephyr runs from Chicago through Denver to San Francisco. The train stop is in the historic Union Station which allows riders to transition to the 16th Street free MallRide and/or make use of the Light Rail.
