Because of the broad nature of these entrance essays, there are some pretty popular topics that end up being used by many schools. What you need to understand about these topics is that the questions are being asked so that the admission team can see what you think; they’re looking for who you are. Consider the following common entrance essay topics and how they should be approached by a prospective student:

• “What is one important experience or achievement in your life, and how did it impact you?”

This question is asking about what you consider true accomplishments to be, thus what you value. They also want to hear your description of a time that you grew as a person. When approaching this essay, don’t try to list every accomplish you’ve ever had or even the same ones listed in your application (at least in the same way). Just pick one moment that affected you, that you are proud of. Even if it’s small, it can be very impressive if it shows them who you really are and how you have matured. Take some credit for the experience, but don’t brag. Show a change, but don’t make your previous self sound like a horror. Focus on who you are now.

• “What is one local, national, or international issue that is important to you?”

Even though this question seems to be very outwardly focused, it still needs to be personal. The goal is still to show what your values are and how you can express them. So discuss an important cause and how your life relates; perhaps answer the subtle question, “Why do you care?” Once again, here, take the opportunity to show them the positive traits in your character. Be passionate, but not narrow-minded. Show that you are fair and think logically even in your fervor. Be confident, yet humble; don’t generalize things or sound as if you know it all.

• “Who is one person or historical figure that has shaped you and how?”

This question is seeking to discover what and who in your life have shaped you. In fact, your prospective college can learn a lot about what you value and your life’s standards by who you look up to or the people that mentored you. The problem that many people face when answering this question is thinking that they should focus on Benjamin Franklin (or whoever they chose). But Ben’s not applying to the school; they want to know about you! So connect the person to yourself. Why is his honesty so important to you? How has your life been changed by him? Be descriptive of him, but only as you can compare it to you. Once again, show a level head and personal character.
