Unfortunately, many people spend hundreds of hours in class watching their watches. Not only is this regrettable because of the money they’re spending and what they’re not learning, they are also setting themselves up for trouble later when studying. One of the best things that you can do to help yourself study is to really be present and listening in class.
When you come to class, make sure that you are ready to listen, that you are consciously triumphing over your emotions, the atmosphere, and other distractions. Make sure that you have completed the assigned readings and your mind is prepared to comprehend. Also make a conscious choice to control your attitude; if you tell yourself that the topic is important and interesting, your mind will take in a lot more. Don’t give in to distractions and things that make a classroom uncomfortable – room temperature, noise, etc. Focus on what is most important – learning!
Also, make every effort possible to learn. Refuse to be lazy. Be very purposeful about what you’re listening for. Ask yourself questions regarding the material, and listen for the answers. Try to keep your mind open, so that you’ll be stretched – even if something is not approached from your point of view. Don’t give in to the temptation to daydream; maintain eye contact with your teacher, and try for all you’re worth to understand what’s going on. If the information is difficult to understand, rise to the challenge! Ask questions, and give your mind a workout.
