Getting involved on campus can be great for the student that is doing it. Because they build self-esteem and allow students to meet new people, clubs and interest groups are very popular. However, many people want to do more with their free time than just hang out with other duck lovers; they want to make a difference. This is why so many students ask the question, “Is there anywhere on campus that I could volunteer?
Many schools have student-run organizations – just like the other clubs – that focus on giving back to the community. If you have a specific talent that you’d like to share, check around your school and see if they have any volunteer organizations that could use your gifs. Maybe you’ll want to get involved in public health awareness or serve at the ASPCA. There are many other groups, too, that are all over the country and probably have branches at your school. To be a part of Habitat for Humanity or Big Brother Big Sisters, you don’t have to have any particular talents; you just need to be willing to share your time to make a difference. You can also partner with other institutions in your area that rely on volunteers to operate their programs – such as local schools in need of reading tutors. If you’re not sure what your school has or how you can get involved, check with your Campus Life office or a campus volunteer center, and they will be able to hook you up with projects that could use your help.
