When do I need to choose a major?

Although many students like to choose their major as soon as they get to college, most colleges don’t require that you declare a major until your junior year. This is because of the many general education courses that are required for most general degrees. (Of course, this is a little different if you are attending a school that focuses only on a few degree programs – like a Dance or a Bible College.)

Most students also have a list of elective hours that they are able to take, and many like to use these to help them decide on their major. By taking samples of several fields of study that they’re interested in, they can narrow down the list of possibilities. However, here’s a word to the wise: waiting until the last minute to decide on a major can be detrimental if you end up not liking the major. You’ve already used up all of your free electives, and you’re beginning your junior year. If you followed this course and ended up having to change majors, you may be looking at an extra year of college.

The timeframe in which you must decide a major is also greatly affected by what major you are choosing. Some degree programs – like Pre-Med and Education – have a long list of required courses that must be taken in sequence. And if you’re hoping to complete your degree in four years, you have to jump on board as soon as possible. Consider carefully what you are interested in and if you have the liberty of a casual decision. It may be in your best interests to go ahead and sign up with that Education major and change it later if you find that it doesn’t suit you.
