Deciding on a major is an important step in every college student’s journey. For some, the decision is easy; their particular career choice may mandate a certain major. Others, though, may not be sure what they want to do; or perhaps they enjoy many things and struggle to narrow the list of choices. When considering what major you should choose, look at these things:
• Your passions. What are you deeply interested in? What makes you come alive? There is a reason that you love to do certain things; you’re created like that. So consider seriously what you love to do, and decide if there’s any way that those passions can be incorporated into your career option.
• Your abilities. What are you good at? Do a little self-examination of your strengths. What classes did you excel at in high school? Try to be realistic. While you may love to teach, consider if you are any good at it. Ask those around you. While hard work can help you improve some rough skills, you don’t want to set yourself up for failure. Evaluate where you really shine.
• Your desires. What do you consider a worthy life? Do you have any goals for your work? Perhaps you’ve always wanted to help people; or maybe you really like working under pressure. Perhaps you just want to make a lot of money. Look for a job that will help you accomplish your goals.
• The possibilities. Check out the majors that are available at your school and the careers that are possible with each major. Do you have the money or the time or the energy that it takes to pursue certain goals? It is important to consider these possibilities; however, consider them fairly as factors, not as definers. Things like money and other obstacles can be overcome; it’s just crucial that you face them now and know what you’re up against.
