Social Balance

Thankfully, it is not only possible to develop a strong social life in college and still fulfill your responsibilities as a student and other roles that you may play, but it is also quite healthy. Having a healthy social life is all about balance; while socializing all the time isn’t wise, neither is refusing to meet people or get involved.

In order to make sure that you can find the needed social balance in your life, make a decision at the beginning of each term that you will not allow your academics to keep you out of the rest of life. (Granted, this is very relative. If you are studying to become a doctor and have to give many hours to homework, that is ok. Just make sure that you have some time to interact with people and unwind.) Also, when scheduling your days, make sure that there are times where you will be spending free time with others. If possible, work very hard for most days of the week in order to leave a large chunk of time – like a whole Saturday – free to interact with others. And if it is possible to do these things somewhere off campus, even better. This provides a strong mental release from your academics and can help you better get involved in social activities. Balance is crucial to a healthy and whole life; protect your school time fervently, and do the same for your free time. This will help ensure that you are growing as a well-rounded person in college, not too social or too academic.
