Students spend thousands of dollars every year of their own money, their parents’ money, and borrowed money to go to school. Then – one of three things happens. They become distracted by the many other exciting pieces of college life and fail to learn what they’re paying for. They study and study without appropriate breaks or relaxation and are burnt out after one semester. Or, they learn to appropriately balance their academic life, and they end up not only learning a lot but also maintaining a healthy lifestyle and growing as an individual.

To try and work on academic balance, it’s important to first consider the time you have and how to manage it wisely. In a calendar or organizer, write down all of the due dates throughout the semester as well as the reading and other projects that will be required. With this general overview of things, you’ll be able to start planning your days, weeks, and months in order to get everything done. Schedule in study time, but also schedule in social events, exercise, and other things that the realistic student knows is needed. Decide up front how much time you want to give to yourself and to friends and significant others. Then, stick to your schedule as much as possible without allowing it to cause unneeded stress. Form good study habits in learning-conducive environments, and be responsible regarding your academic work. But also remember to balance your scholarly aspirations with the other needed aspects of your life – sociality, emotional experiences, and a physically active lifestyle.
