Coin collecting is a popular hobby for people of all ages and all levels on enthusiasm. The casual or beginning coin collector, however, does not have hundreds of dollars or hours to devote to tracking down coins. If this describes you, try starting your collection with some of these popular coins:

• Buffalo Nickel: The buffalo nickel (which preceded the current Jefferson nickel) gets its name from the buffalo on its reverse.
• Wheat Penny: The wheat penny preceded the current Lincoln penny, but like the current penny, it contained an image of Abraham Lincoln on the front. Unlike the current model, however, the wheat penny depicts stalks of wheat on the reverse.
• State Quarters: From 1999 until 2008, the U.S. mint is printing quarters to commemorate each of these fifty states.
• Kennedy Half-Dollars: This fifty-cent piece was minted from 1964 until 2002 and is still in casual circulation today.
• Eisenhower Dollar: This silver dollar appeared from 1971 until 1978 and features a profile of President Dwight Eisenhower.
• Mercury Dime: The mercury dime preceded the current Roosevelt dime and depicts the figure of Liberty with a winged cap.
• Morgan Dollar: The Morgan silver dollar was minted from 1878 until 1904 and regained popularity among collectors in the 1960s.

The primary reason the above coins are popular is that they have historic, distinctive, and classic designs. In addition, they are inexpensive and relatively easy to find; you may even run across one in general circulation.
