Genuine Kona Coffee, one of the most sought after coffees in the world, is extremely valued because of its pleasing aroma and full-bodied flavor. The coffee is refined in the North and South regions of Kona on the Big Island of Hawaii. Growing in the unique environment of the Hualalai and Mauna Loa Mountains amidst fertile volcanic soil mixed with afternoon cloud cover (known as automatic shade), makes Kona coffee have a clear advantage over coffees grown in the other parts of the world as it is wet-processed.

Kona coffee is hand picked, pulped, dried and hulled away. Machinery at the coffee mill arranges the kona beans into numerous grades by size and shape.

The best kona coffee bean is peaberry. This particular bean is produced when one part of the flower combines with the other leaving only one bean in the coffee cherry. The peaberry bean comprises only 5% to 10% of the total Kona Coffee harvest.

Kona coffee is sun dried and later custom roasted depending on preferred results and variations in bean moisture. The key to a great bean is to have a good roasting process. Dark roasts are generally called Italian, French Roast or Espresso. Medium roasts consist of Vienna and Full-City.

Be careful when you go to purchase Kona coffee that you check the label. If it says “Kona blend”, understand that it only includes 10% Kona beans. The few Kona beans in the bag are typically mixed with those from Central America, Brazil, Indonesia, and Africa. There are some who claim that Kona coffee suffers from the identical problems as Jamaican Blue Mountain coffee: it is overpriced for its quality! All the same, the Kona cup is an enjoyable experience, worth swallowing.
