Espresso can be very difficult to make, even for the experienced barrista. Its taste can be altered by extremely minor factors, including humidity. In fact, there are at least 13 factors that must be considered when making espresso, many having to do with temperature, pressure, time, and environment.

Because of the complexity of this delicate cup of coffee, Dr. Andrea Illy, CEO of Illycaffè in Switzerland, became concerned that consumers would buy his brand of espresso and be unable to make the perfect cup. He worried that less-than-perfect espresso would reflect badly on the Illy brand. Therefore, he designed espresso pods so that even the inexperienced connoisseur could make delicious, quality espresso in the comfort of their own home.
