Espresso is a roast of coffee brewed from finely ground beans that have been roasted to a medium or dark brown color and are sometimes oily in consistency. It is made by forcing very hot, highly pressurized water through the grounds. Espresso is stronger than regular coffee and is known to be a bit thicker. A correctly brewed espresso will have a thin layer of lighter brown foam on top called crema. Espresso is used in many beverages, including lattes, cappuccinos, macchiatos, and mochas.

The word espresso, meaning 'express' in Italian, refers to the method of brewing the beverage. For instance, espresso, unlike coffee, is never made ahead of time and kept in a carafe. It is brewed when it is ordered and is considered to be custom-brewed for the customer. The Italian word espresso also refers to the fact that the water is forced quickly through the grounds, without stopping, like an express train.
