Paying for convenience has become a way of life, and it is no different with espresso pods. They do cost a little bit more than normal ground coffee or coffee beans, but many people consider their ease well worth the extra money. Pods are sold by the box or in bulk. One box usually contains 18 to 24 pods. The price can range anywhere from $8.95 to $14.99 per box, which comes to 37¢ to 83¢ per pod; gourmet pods can cost even more. Bulk boxes can contain up to 150 pods per box and usually cost between $40 and $60 per box, which comes to 27¢ to 40¢ per pod.
Chances are, your favorite brand of coffee is also sold in pods. And it is a lot less expensive to make your own fancy coffee drink at home than it is to buy it at a restaurant! For example, you can buy a box of 24 Starbucks Espresso Pods for $9.90. That comes to 41¢ per pod. Add steamed milk, sugar, and flavor to that same amount of espresso, and it can cost anywhere from $1.40 to $4.15 at a Starbucks restaurant, more in some cities.
An espresso machine (or E.S.E. system) may seem expensive at first, since it can cost between $100 and $1000, depending on how high quality of a machine you want. But if you bought a $3.00 cup of coffee or espresso beverage every weekday for one year, you would spend $780. Imagine how much money you would save if you bought a modest $200 machine and spent 41¢ per day on pods. You would spend $304 the first year that you bought the machine, and around $104 per year after that. Save that coffee money for a few years and you can take a trip to Italy, where espresso was invented!
