Moanin' for Kona

A good cup of Kona coffee can be pretty amazing, if you can find it.

Coffee has been grown on Hawaii for almost 200 years. The first plants arrived in style on a British war ship in 1825. The region of Kona, a 30-kilometre-long, 3-kilometre wide coastal strip on the slopes of the volcanos Hualalai and Mauna Loa, has subtropic climate and is ideal for coffee growing.

It gets morning sun and afternoon shade when clouds move in. The volcano has made the soil rich, and there's plenty of moisture, said Alban's wife, Deepa. People native to Hawaii call the climate a gift from God to coffee beans.
