Rock climbing can cause many different injuries if your body is not well prepared for the sport. In order to prevent potential sprains and strains it is imperative that you have proper conditioning prior to climbing. The following are some suggestion for getting your body ready for safe rock climbing:

• Many people get so excited about the sport, that they just dive right into it and this puts them at risk for overusing their bodies. It is important that you enter the sport gradually because you will be using muscles while rock climbing that you may not use on a regular basis.

• It is also important to develop a stretching routine for after a five to ten minute warm up period. This routine should include stretches for your arms, neck, shoulders, back and legs. You can also work out your forearm and fingers by squeezing a worn-out tennis ball.

• If you are having a problem with blisters, you can prevent them by taping your fingers and using chalk to keep them from drying out.

• Before you gear up, tape between your finger joints, and around your wrists, fingers, and elbows. This will add support ant protection for your tendons while you climb. You can also reduce skin abrasions by taping the back of your hands and wrists in a figure eight pattern.

• As with any sport, it is imperative that you drink plenty of water. Staying hydrated will not only keep you from passing out, but it will give you more strength to climb the rocks.
