Once you have been climbing for a while, you might find yourself wondering, “How often should I replace my rope?” This is a very important question to ask, simply because the rope is most important piece of equipment when it comes to rock climbing safety. Many rope companies suggest that you retire your rope if it fits one of the following characteristics:
• You have used it almost daily for six months to a year.
• You have used it almost every weekend for up to two years.
• You have used it only occasionally for up to four years.
• It has any irregularities, sheath damage, core damage, or soft spots.
The above was just a general guideline, but if you have any doubts about your rope at any time…get rid of it! It is much better to spend the cash on a new rope then to jeopardize your safety.
