There are many destinations that ice climbers can trek to in order to enjoy ice climbing. Below are some popular destinations in the United States:

  • Ouray, Colorado: The Ouray Ice Park is located in the Uncompahgre Gorge in Ouray, Colorado. Opened in 1995, Ouray Ice Park is the world’s first park dedicated solely to the activity of ice climbing. This is one of the best places to learn how to climb ice as the park is very user-friendly. Climbing in the park is absolutely free which makes it no surprise that it is visited from an unprecedented number of climbers from around the world. Ouray Ice Park is constantly supplied by water and possesses a new plumbing system. Visitors can enjoy the natural Hot Springs during their trip as well as a wide variety of accommodations as the park is located close to Montrose, Colorado. The Ouray Ice Festival, which highlights free clinics, slide shows, gear demos, seminars, and exhibition climbing, is a foremost climber’s rendezvous each January.
  • California: Lee Vining is the primary ice-climbing location in California, located East of Yosemite. The area is fairly crowded, however, no need to fear that there will be a shortage of ice. Ice forms consistently at the site, due to a leak in a water conduit. This location is a great area to practice ice climbing. There is an easy walk-out found on the right for all the climbs so that every climb can be easily top-roped. Tokopah Valley, Sequoia National Park is also a hot spot to ice climb in California. Ice forms consistently in the late season and the climbs range in difficulty and length. The most fascinating climb is Moonage Daydream, and some claim it is the best climb to tackle in California. While in the park, climbers will want to keep in mind that some climbs are susceptible to avalanche hazard.
