Final Thoughts

Sometimes I put off trying out a new sport because I fear being confused by all the jargon and equipment. With the proliferation of indoor climbing facilities, it is much simpler to get a good lesson on the basics and get climbing without even buying any equipment. Don’t let the jargon and equipment intimidate you; grab a few lessons, and then piece together your climbing gear checklist. The more you climb the more you will find to buy; like a chalk bag and cool sunglasses and climbing shorts, etc.

The first thing on your checklist should be the will and determination to act. Get off the couch and get out there! After you have checked off determination, go down the list of basics and make sure you have what you need. Always put safety above everything; it is not recommended that you start climbing without a helmet. A solid harness and sturdy rope are essentials. Specialized climbing shoes are optional as you start out. The stronger your feet get the sooner you will be able to switch to the climbing shoes. Biners are your links to safety. They are like good orange juice—don’t skimp on them! So strap on your harness and hit the rock face!
