Choosing the right harness

This may not mean anything to an amateur climber but there are various types and styles of harness available on the market. Choosing the right one which is comfortable per individual is vital because it will carry all your body weight during your climb and this is not an item where you want to only spend a few dollars.

1) Multipurpose – These prove ideal for beginners because it is tied round your waist and it is also padded to provide ultimate comfort throughout. You will find the leg loops are detachable so if you need a toilet break, there is no hassle of having to remove all the ropes as well.
2) Competitive – A style of harness not suitable for beginners, whilst these have similar features, there is minimal padding and is only when taking part in a many stream competition should one of these be used.

There are many others available on the market and when looking to purchase this equipment, it is important to seek professional advice on the most suitable for your experience level but to begin with, stick with the multipurpose until your confidence and skill level is overall higher.

Top Tip: A perfect fitting harness is essential. If it is too tight then it will be very constricting and is guaranteed to pinch. Too loose and it will make you slip a lot which could cause a lot of safety issues.
