Begin day two with a stroll of The Bund, Shanghai’s mile-long stretch of colonial buildings from its trading heyday. The structures were built by Americans and Europeans after Britain’s victory in the First Opium War opened Shanghai for international trade. Countries all over the world set up concessions in the city from which they could operate their businesses, resulting in 52 different types of architecture represented along the waterfront stretch. It is a living classroom for students of architecture and building.
The best part about walking The Bund is that is it done from a pedestrian promenade located across the street along the river. The raised walkway provides stellar views of The Bund itself, along with views of Pudong across the water. Most people consider it the best spot in Shanghai. If you are particularly interested in how The Bund developed, you can stop by the Bund History Museum for lots of interesting artifacts and photos. Also stop into the Peace Hotel to see Shanghai’s legendary hotspot from the 1930s.
When you are finished at The Bund, make your way up to the Nanjing Lu Pedestrian Mall for more wonderful strolling. End your day with dinner at one of the fine restaurants located on The Bund. Many of them offer incredible views certain to distract you from the fine food.
