The world of fashion is watching Shanghai closely. Just as Milan, Paris, and New York City have emerged as fashion powerhouses, Shanghai is poised to stake that claim in the East. The city began hosting Shanghai Fashion Week in 2003, where designers exhibit their new collections, and a recent fashion week in 2005 saw the likes of Karl Lagerfeld displaying his designs.

Styles in Shanghai are an interesting mix of Eastern and Western, and local designers are known for taking elements from both and combining them into a progressive and new approach to fashion. The result is unusual to Americans, but it sweeping the Eastern world.

Shanghai is home to numerous upscale boutiques including Marc Jacobs, Chanel, Louis Vuitton, and Cartier. The city offers the best shopping in all of China, and Shanghai residents pride themselves on being fashionable and current. Xin Tiandi and the Shanghai Centre are full of upscale boutiques where Shanghai’s fashionistas troll the racks in search of the latest trends.
