Just in case you forgot where you were, amidst the European architecture and history, a visit to Yu Yuan will remind you your feet are firmly planted in China. Built between 1559 and 1577, Yu Yuan was home to the imperial Ming Dynasty. The complex includes a collection of pavilions, rockeries, arched bridges, and goldfish ponds, spread across five acres. Though its size is small by imperial standards, it manages to hold some thirty pavilions.
The Old Chinese City includes the wonderful Old Town Bazaar, the Confucian Temple, and the remnants of Shanghai’s city wall.
