The Oriental Pearl TV Tower was built in 1995 in Pudong, as one of the first major constructions in the district. It houses the aforementioned Shanghai Municipality History Museum, and you can ascend by elevator to a choice of three levels for a fantastic view of Shanghai.

Shanghai is divided in two by the Huangpu River. The Pudong area to the east of the river is considered the “New Shanghai” and everything west of the river is “Old Shanghai.” One of the most entertaining ways to view both is through a Huangpu River Cruise. Different cruises are available, but the best ones last 3-4 hours and give you a comprehensive tour of the city, via the water. You will get a fantastic view of The Bund on one side, and the towering skyscrapers of Pudong on the other. Gliding between them is perhaps the best way to truly feel the magnitude of the city.

Shanghai has several historical residences that have been converted for tour. Some of the most significant include Sun Yat-sen’s Former Residence (founder of the Chinese Republic), Zhao Enlai’s Former Residence (one of China’s revered leaders under Chairman Mao’s regime), and Soong-Ching Ling’s Former Residence (wife of Sun Yat-sen).

Xin Tiandi (translation: New Heaven and Earth) is a two-block complex of shops, restaurants, bars, and boutiques that will make any westerner feel as if they have never left home. It is modern, highly hip, and lots of fun. The Shanghai Centre is a similarly modern collection of retailers.

If you are traveling with kids, you simply must not miss the Shanghai Circus World (even if you don’t have kids, go anyway). The facility alone will boggle your mind with its revolving stage and complex lighting. The Shanghai Acrobatic Troupe performs a 20-act production that will leave you shaking your head in disbelief.

Other kid-friendly sites include the Shanghai Zoo, the Shanghai Ocean Aquarium, Ocean World, the Shanghai Wild Animal Park, and the Jin Jiang Amusement Park.
