» Day One - Hong Kong
The most popular tourist destination in Hong Kong is Victoria Harbor and it is definitely a must-see. Victoria Harbor is one of the deepest container ports in the world and is one of Hong Kong’s most famous attractions. The skylines on either side of the harbor are spectacular, with skyscrapers and Victoria Peak on one side and the Tsim Sha Tsui shoreline on the other. You’ll see hundreds of ferries, tugs, junks, speedboats, and barges passing through that pause only for Typhoons. The harbor is open 24 hours a day, so fit this into your day whenever you are free.
While you are at the harbor, you will definitely want to take a trip on the Star Ferry. Although it’s only a ten-minute trip across Victoria Harbor, you’ll be thrilled by the stretch of skyscrapers, hotels, and apartment blocks, especially if you go at night. Admission is only HKD2.20 and ferries run from 6:30 am to 11:30 pm every day.
If you get time in the afternoon, you may also want to visit the Wong Tai Sin Temple. This well-known temple was built in 1973 and is an excellent example of a traditional Chinese temple. It is named for Wong Tai Sin, a shepherd boy from the Zhejiang province who was believed to have the power of healing. People visit the temple today to have their fortunes revealed to them. Admission is free, but donations are welcome.
Another amazing site in Hong Kong is Victoria Peak. The view seen from Victoria Peak is unmatched throughout the world. You may want to head over to “The Peak” in the evening since the spectacular panoramic view of the city is especially beautiful at night when the lights are gleaming. In addition to the city view, you can also check out the greener western parts of Hong Kong Island from the viewing platforms on top of the Peak Tower and Peak Galleria. There is a tram available to take you to the top. Prices depend on the type of ticket purchased, but range from HK5 to HK400. For additional information, visit www.thepeak.com.hk.
While you’re at “The Peak,” you can stay for dinner at the Peak Lookout. You’ll love the ambience as you dine under the stars at this famous Hong Kong restaurant. The menu is very diverse, with dishes from all over the world. Try the tandoori chicken marinated in yogurt and herbs or the barbecued meats and fish. Guests can dine inside in the Old Victoria Peak rickshaw terminus or outside on the terrace.
