No visit to Beijing would be complete without traveling north to see the magnificent Great Wall of China. A marvel of engineering and history, the Wall was constructed from the 3rd century B.C. all the way through the 17th century, primarily to ward off invading Mongolians, though Turks and others proved a threat as well.
The Badaling section is the most popular for visitors, given its close proximity to Beijing. Construction began on this portion of the wall in 1368, and lasted for some 200 years. It averages a height of 24 feet and a width of 21 feet.
The Badaling section was restored in 1957 to its original appearance during the Ming dynasty. In recent years several tourist friendly attractions have been added including a museum, a theater, several restaurants, and even a cable-car ride. If you would prefer a less-touristy experience, consider exploring some of the less populous portions of the wall. Wherever you end up, take some time to walk the Wall, just to gain a small glimpse into its size and scope. It is truly a wonder to behold, and viewing the magnificence of China’s past is an awe-inspiring way to end your stay in Beijing.
