Day Two

Spend day two visiting the Temple of Heaven, an immense complex of religious sites southeast of the Forbidden City. The same emperor who oversaw the construction of the Forbidden City built the park. It was originally used at the winter solstice to offer sacrifices and entreat the gods for a good harvest. The Circular Altar, a three-tiered marble terrace, is where bulls would be slaughtered and set on fire in an elaborate religious ceremony. Other sites include the Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests and the Imperial Hall of Heaven.

After your tour, spend the afternoon in the new and interesting Chao Yang district, the wealthiest area in Beijing. Chao Yang Park, a large collection of restaurants and cafes, is great for people watching and shopping. The area is also home to the Central Business District, the China World Trade Center and the Jian Guo Men and Ri Tan business and embassy districts. The San Li Tun area is the place to go for nightlife.
