The country of Chile has a total population of nearly thirteen million people. 5.8 million of those inhabitants reside in Santiago so that almost 40% of the total population of the country resides in the capital. The population of Santiago multiplied from 1.33 million in 1950 to 2.84 million in 1970 and 4.73 million in 1990. Today it is one of the largest cities in South America. The government has encouraged its citizens to settle outside of the capital as much as possible to alleviate some the stress on the city’s infrastructure.
