The national dance of Chile is cueca. The dance derived from peasant folklore and some believe that it developed as a symbol of the newborn republic in opposition to the Spanish crown. The steps can symbolize either the cornering of a filly by a Chilean cowboy, which he is attempting to lasso, or the passionate courting of a couple. Both men and women dance to this traditional rhythm, while twirling their kerchiefs in the air.
