The swampy, flat land where the Chicago River meets Lake Michigan might not seem like particularly fertile ground -- but architecture, music, and the visual arts have flourished there. Over the past 200 years, Chicago has grown from an isolated fort with a few soldiers and fur-traders, to a brilliant metropolis of almost 2.9 million people – over 9 million in the greater metropolitan area. The icons of its history and its present have significance for the entire nation. Some are notorious, like Al Capone and Upton Sinclair’s The Jungle. Some are nationally admired and beloved, like the Chicago Cubs and the Sears Tower. Chicago’s 30 million annual visitors experience a unique and fascinating city, as well as an important slice of American life, culture, and history.
