St. Martin is part of the 37-square-mile island of St. Maarten/St. Martin, which is the smallest land mass in the world that is divided between two governments. The Dutch and the French are its dual owners, with St. Maarten being Dutch and St. Martin being French. The island has been shared by the Dutch and French for nearly 350 years, and the absence of conflict between the two makes St. Maarten/St. Martin a remarkably peaceful island.
French St. Martin takes up the majority of the island and is known mostly for its quiet beaches and delicious cuisine. This part of the island is elegant and luxurious, with plush accommodations at excellent resorts and some of the best dining in the Caribbean. Scenic bays, fashionable shops, and interesting museums make up the carefree feel of French St. Martin.
For a little bit of French culture on your vacation in the sun, take off for St. Martin.
