Belize is on the eastern coastline of Central America. It is approximately 180 miles long and 68 miles wide at its widest point. Mexico borders Belize on the north, and Guatemala borders it on the south and west. It is bordered by the Caribbean Sea on the east and has 174 miles of coast. Also part of Belize are 200 islands or cays, which range from a few hundred feet to 25 miles long and four miles wide in size. Belize’s population is around 280,000.
Belize is known for its archaeological heritage of Maya temples and palaces. It is believed that Belize was the heart of the Maya civilization from 250 AD to 900 AD. There is still a considerable Maya population living within some small villages of Belize, even though no large Maya cultural centers exist. The Belize Institute of Archaeology has developed locations that are easily accessible for tourists who are interested in archaeological sites.
Of course, Belize provides the normal vacation activities popular in many Caribbean destinations, such as scuba diving, snorkeling, windsurfing, fishing, sailing, bird-watching, caving, canoeing, kayaking, golfing, water sports, and night life. But Belize adds a few new things to the mix, such as the afore-mentioned archaeology and also whale watching! Whales gather in southern Belize for two months every year in the spring. It is an amazing sight to behold!
For an educational and somewhat different vacation, set your sights on Belize. It will not disappoint!
