Even if you know what information to provide in a resume, it is easy to make mistakes. If a job prompts hundreds of resumes, an error-filled resume will keep you from serious consideration. Watch for these resume dangers:
- Poor appearance: Colored paper, confusing format, and non-standard font and typeface all distract the reader from the information in a resume. Use white paper with Times New Roman or another readable font and neatly bullet ideas. Avoid typographical errors at all costs.
- Too long/too bland: Hiring managers have limited amounts of time to read scores of resumes so get to the point quickly. In addition, use action words when describing your work experience. “Hired, trained, and supervised fifteen employees,” for example, or “Designed and directed programs structured to generate community interest in…”
- Not having a resume: Even if you mail or email a resume, carry a current resume with you to all interviews and make sure that the employer has one of your resumes. Demonstrate that you will be a professional and prepared employee.
Websites such as monster.com and careerbuilder.com offer substantial guidance on resume writing as well as numerous resume samples. Computer programs such as Microsoft Word usually have templates to guide you through the resume writing process as well. These tools can help you, but perhaps the most important way to avoid errors is simply to take your time. Try reading over your resume from the perspective of a hiring manager: what will he/she want to know about you? What is he/she looking for?
