Learning how someone thinks is a major step toward working effectively with them toward a common goal. Understanding how a person’s personality shapes his view of the world will assist managers in placing people in positions for which they are hard-wired to succeed.
By selecting and placing employees whose personality and learning style are consistent with the goals of the job, the ease with which the task will be performed increases. Job satisfaction will be higher for those employees placed in positions consistent with their own personality and learning style and productivity will increase.
The goal of all managers is to place qualified people in each position, instruct them in what is necessary to successfully complete the job, and to be able to trust that the employee will fulfill those expectations to the best of their ability. The key, therefore, is to be able to predict which employee will succeed in which position.
Implementation of a hiring policy which includes a one or more basic personality and learning style tests is a good first step. When faced with more than one qualified candidate, knowing more about each one might help determine which candidate is a better fit for the team. Be sure to check with your HR department to prevent any appearance of discrimination based on the outcome of each of the tests.
Then once you’ve made a decision on which employee is the right one for the job, knowing what excites and motivates them will make it possible to continue to challenge them as they continue in that position.
