There are many tests available, some of which are offered online at little or not cost, but for in-depth, reliable testing, professional tests are available for purchase. For employment purposes, the commercial tests, administered by a trained professional are best. However, for training purposes or for discussion at a company retreat, self-tests can be enlightening and informative. Self-tests can even be motivating and help employee relations when everyone understands that their coworkers have different personalities and learning styles. Knowing how a coworker thinks can make it easier to achieve success together, when the knowledge is used to take best advantage of the strengths of everyone on the team.

Depending on the size and budget of your Human Resources Department, you may be able to employ the full or part-time expertise of a psychometric analyst, who is trained to administer tests and to advise you on the results. If not, it is possible to enlist these services on a contract basis.

Even still, once a group of coworkers have taken these tests, it is important to remember that these tests, and the knowledge gained from the results are limited. It is also important that everyone understand these limitations. None of us are automatons, blindly responding to stimuli in consistently the same way. We all incorporate different learning styles at different times and our personalities are often altered slightly by mood changes, illness, and stress. Understanding the limitations can free us to incorporate what we’ve learned about each other while allowing for those individual differences.
