Networking is not just about events in hotel ballrooms. There are simple things you can do every day to build your business network that do not require a lot of extra time.

Perri Capell, a senior correspondent for www.CareerJournal.com, tells the story of businessman Tim Ayers in her article “Finding Time: Blending Networking Into Your Life.” Ayers devotes about five minutes per day to call or email some of the 900 people in his computerized database, including colleagues, vendors and others he has worked with in the past. He makes the calls either first thing in the morning or between appointments.

Remember that networking is not only about new contacts – use your existing ties to spread the word if you are looking for a new job or seeking more business. When you are talking to someone for another reason in your daily routine, ask him if he knows of anyone you should talk to about your business. Also ask him whether he would be willing to make the initial point of contact for you or perhaps join you in a lunch meeting with this new contact.
