Motivation is key to encouraging employee to meet the goals you set, exhibit the behaviors you find important, and to grow personally and professionally. To start, you need to know what behaviors and goals you want your employees to meet. Make a list of what’s most important to you: Is it getting to work on time? Is it making the most sales? Is it getting clients handled within a certain time frame? Is it working with fewer errors while keeping time in check? Whatever it is, make your goals clear to your employees. Then build your motivation strategy around that.

Your goals, however, may not be the same goals as your employees’. That’s where motivation comes in. Yes, you pay them. But giving them a little extra incentive to meet your goals—to do things your way, in your time, every time—will encourage them to do what’s most important to you.
Survey your employees to find out what kinds of motivation work best for them. People respond to different types of motivation, and it’s your job to find out what that is for each person. Then structure your motivation strategy to encompass the needs of your employees. Make the goals, outcomes, and rewards clear. Communicating goals to employees helps them gain a clear sense of your vision.
Employees have to accept the goals you set, meaning that they can’t conflict with their interests and values. You also need to make the goals realistic, while still a bit of a stretch.
